The Department of Historical and Cultural Studies of the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the historical study of Gender, Immigration, and Diaspora. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2014.
The successful candidate will develop the department’s strengths in women’s and gender studies, immigration history, urban studies, and diaspora studies. The department particularly encourages applications from scholars who can contribute to interdisciplinary teaching, research, and programming. In addition, experience in public history, archival work, and local history will be regarded favorably.
Applicants must have a PhD in History and/or Women Studies and Gender and demonstrate excellence in research and teaching. Special consideration will be given to applicants whose teaching and research methods engage with a multidisciplinary department that includes historians, women’s and gender studies scholars, and area studies specialists.
The candidate will be responsible for the development of a range of undergraduate courses, including at the introductory level. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to work closely with scholars in the interdisciplinary City Studies Program to develop both courses and research that engages with the diasporic communities surrounding the UTSC campus. As a full member of the integrated tri-campus Graduate History Department of the University of Toronto, the successful candidate will supervise graduate students and their masters and doctoral theses. S/he will be expected to provide leadership in relevant programs, initiatives, public events, and in the potential development of graduate programs. S/he will develop an independently funded program of research. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
