School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects
Full-time Tenured Faculty and Director of Architecture and Design
|Institution Type:||College / University|
|Location:||Illinois, United States|
|Position:||Administrator, Department Chair, Director, Full Professor|
The Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture and Designed Objects (AIADO) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, an internationally recognized and top-ranking private school of art and design, seeks a Director to join its ranks of innovative design faculty. The complexity of a department that works beyond the boundaries of established disciplines requires a leader and colleague who can initiate, facilitate, and manage departmental needs with a wide range of stakeholders-including other departments in the School, other academic institutions, corporate partners, and members of the national and international design community. SAIC is an institution with a strong tradition of faculty governance that fosters a collegial and collaborative approach to leadership. The selection process and contractual negotiations will conclude by the end of April 2014, with the successful candidate expected to begin in August 2014. The Director position is for a renewable five-year term, with tenure at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Rank and salary are commensurate with the candidate’s quality of scholarship or practice, academic leadership experience, and current professional standing.
About the AIADO Department
AIADO offers unique and individualized learning experiences on both graduate and undergraduate levels that explore interdisciplinary and discipline-based design, and the intersections between art and design. Comprised of three disciplines, the department deliberately works beyond the boundaries of established frameworks to encourage exploration and innovation that typically result in the critical and experimental rethinking of given norms. The AIADO department, one of twenty departments in the School, offers up to 200 courses each year, and supports 90 dedicated graduate students and 150 undergraduate students. The department has 15 full-time and 50 part-time faculty who are active professionals in their respective fields. Three full-time design historians work with the department to provide required and elective courses in the history and theory of design. The department is currently administered by three program chairs that are tenured faculty, supported by three full-time staff, a variety of technical staff, and student workers. Degrees within the department include the Master of Fine Arts, the NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture, the Master of Design in Designed Objects, and the Bachelor of Interior Architecture recognized by the International Federation of Interior Designers/Architects (IFI), along with a range of courses in design for students from across the institution.
The Director will work with AIADO program chairs and staff to develop new creative opportunities, and strategically position the department and its programs in Chicago, regionally, nationally, and internationally. The Director will manage current initiatives, facilities and resources; support faculty in academic and research goals; negotiate industry collaborations; and develop systems and organizational structures to support a growing and vital department. Areas of oversight include project proposals and implementation, budget management, coordination and authorship of internal and external communications, course schedule and contracts, full-time faculty searches, contract and tenure reviews, and faculty personnel concerns. The ideal candidate will have an international network within the field to promote the School’s programs and projects. The Director is primarily a leadership role with limited teaching responsibilities-possibly leading a research seminar, theory or studio course each year, after the first year, that complements and expands the core areas of the department. In consultation with the program chairs and AIADO faculty, the Director will advance long-range planning and a vision for the department, and will work with senior administration, including the President, Dean of Faculty, and the Advisory Design Council to facilitate such planning. The Director reports to the Dean of Faculty.
