Boston University is seeking a Director to provide academic and administrative leadership for the Boston University Study Abroad Shanghai Program. This is a full-time position located in Shanghai, China. Reporting to the Executive Director of Boston University Study Abroad, the Director will manage all aspects of the Boston University Shanghai Program, which includes the curriculum, faculty and staff supervision, internship placements, excursions and other cultural activities, student life, health and safety, operating budgets, compliance with local laws and regulations, and relationships with institutions and organizations in Shanghai directly related to the program operations. Participate in and contribute to the University's effort in publicizing the Shanghai Program and reaching enrollment goals for it.
The ideal candidate will have more than eight years of strong academic and administrative experience, of which at least five years is experience managing the day-to-day operations of a department within a large, complex organization or small business in China, demonstrating extensive knowledge of Chinese culture and business practices. Experience working at a U.S. college or university, or an educational or non-profit organization is necessary. Experience with American students traveling abroad and strong understanding of American higher education academic practices, from course development to student supervision, is essential. Fluency in Mandarin is a must. Excellent managerial, communication and organizational skills in a cross-cultural environment are required, as are the ability to work cooperatively with senior administrators, faculty, students and staff in China and the United States; the ability to communicate professionally and clearly in writing and orally; the proven ability to manage people and projects effectively; and the ability to exercise sound judgment and appropriate response in emergency situations. Minimum Masters degree is required (Doctoral Degree preferred); teaching experience preferred.
