The faculty cluster in the area of LGBTQ Equity, part of the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society at the University of California, Berkeley, is seeking to fill a tenured associate or full professor position with a start date of 7/1/2013. We are looking for candidates with a demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary scholarship who are engaged in empirical research in the social sciences that has relevance to LGBTQ policy issues. The work of the person hired should show commitment to exploring sexuality and/or gender identity from an intersectional perspective (attuned to the ways multiple social categories of difference such as sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, race, age, disability, class and immigration status overlap to impact real world communities). Areas of specialization might include (but are not restricted to) political movements and coalition building; issues related to bisexual and/or transgender identities; systems of institutionalization (prisons, shelters, juvenile detention facilities) and LGBT populations within them; sexuality and different forms of governance structures (e.g., tribal communities in California or elsewhere in the Pacific Rim); the roles of medicine and technology in the construction of gendered bodies; issues related to youth and/or aging in LGBTQ populations. The successful candidate will be housed in the academic unit(s) most relevant to their specialization. Joint appointments are possible. Part of the successful candidate’s teaching will preferably be for the LGBT Studies Minor and/or the graduate Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality, which are housed in Gender and Women’s Studies. The successful candidate will be expected to become a core faculty member of the Cluster and be actively involved in planning Cluster programming and research, as well as sharing responsibility for the administration of the Cluster. Qualifications include a Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant field (for example, a J.D. for a law professor) at the time of application, outstanding research accomplishment, and the capacity for distinguished teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicants should have a demonstrable commitment to building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. The Cluster is also interested in individuals who may have had non-traditional career paths or who may have taken time off for family reasons (e.g., children, disabled, or elderly), or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academe (e.g., in professional or industry service).
