Visual Communication in the Faculty of Arts has a leading reputation in graphic design, illustration and digital media arts and has been influential in many related fields of visual communication including animation, photography and moving image. With particular strengths in sequential and narrative design, visual language and cultures of drawing and representation, the faculty plays a leading role nationally and internationally in advancing contemporary graphic narratives, film, media, animation and illustration, not only within art and design but in a range of interdisciplinary contexts. The faculty is the home of the International Symposium for Electronic Arts (ISEA) and the Design Archives are the home of the International Council for Graphic Design Associations (ICOGRADA). The faculty also has excellent local partnerships with Lighthouse (a leading digital culture agency based in Brighton) and with the international Brighton Festival and Festival Fringe
The main functions of the role are to:
- provide leadership in a combination of teaching, research and community and economic engagement including responsibility for significant elements of the work of the school;
- to develop good practice and expertise in teaching learning and assessment, both personally and throughout the school collaborating with external organisations both nationally and abroad;
- to contribute actively to quality assurance processes;
- to continue to develop a national and international reputation in research, making a significant contribution to the development and management of research in the subject area and publishing regularly in journals;
- to supervise research students to completion.
Essential criteria for the role are:
- a PhD or postgraduate qualification in graphic design, illustration, visual culture or digital design or a closely related field and/or equivalent professional portfolio;
- a substantive and well-developed research portfolio of international standing and expertise in the key fields of work within the faculty’s visual communications portfolio;
- a proven ability to lead and develop research within an academic team and experience of PhD supervision to completion;
- an ability to formulate research projects and groups and to develop and lead successful research grant applications.
