Director, Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies:
Wayne State University seeks a dynamic individual with outstanding leadership skills for the position of Director of the Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies. Reporting to the Provost of the University, the Director serves as the primary administrator of the Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies and as the leader of the University’s Jewish Studies minor. The successful candidate will be an accomplished scholar and teacher, who possesses successful experience in the development of university programs and a vision for building partnerships across Wayne State and with the Jewish community of the Detroit metropolitan area.
The Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies, including its Judaica Resource Center, serves as a resource to Wayne State University and to the larger community in Jewish studies and related areas. As such, it sponsors a broad array of programs and activities that expand several of the University's missions. From international conferences to smaller symposia, incidental lectures, and cultural events, the Cohn-Haddow Center has introduced the University and community to some of the world's most distinguished and eminent academics, writers, poets, artists, and musicians.
The new director will build upon and expand the Center’s considerable achievements. That person will develop and coordinate programming on campus and in the community in the field of Jewish Studies; strengthen and enhance interaction between the Cohn-Haddow Center and the Jewish community; and direct the Jewish Studies minor with an emphasis upon expanding courses offered and increasing student enrollment. As the University’s intellectual leader in Jewish Studies, the director will work with faculty, students and staff interested in research and study in the field. Teaching responsibilities include Jewish Civilization and History and the History of Judaism and Jewish Thought and other undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of History.
The new director also will supervise an administrative assistant and be responsible for an annual budget of approximately $100,000; work collaboratively with an Advisory Board, consisting primarily of members of the Jewish community and Wayne State faculty; work with development officers to plan and implement a fund raising strategy designed to increase the Center’s endowment; and seek funding from appropriate foundations and organizations for visiting faculty and program enhancement.
The individual appointed Director will hold a tenured position in the Department of History with responsibilities divided equally between the Center and the Department. The successful candidate will have a 1-1 teaching load, a salary commensurate with qualifications, and membership in a Department of outstanding scholars and teachers.
