The Department of History, Geography, and Philosophy at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in Public History. This position is a tenure-track, ten-month appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor and reports to the Department Chair of History, Geography, and Philosophy. Expected starting date is August 1, 2012.
Qualifications for this position include a Ph.D. in history (field open) with evidence of public history coursework from an accredited institution at the time of appointment. ABDs will be considered only if applicant can provide evidence of imminent completion of the degree. Applicants should have a record or provide evidence of potential to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in public history and the US or World Civilization survey, oversee internships, build partnerships with local communities, assist with long-term planning and developing new courses in one of the following areas: new media, community-based public history projects, oral history, or cultural heritage. Candidates will also be responsible for managing the undergraduate and graduate public history concentration and recruiting students to the program. In addition, candidates should be able to show experience or potential for teaching, scholarship and service, and a strong commitment to liberal arts/humanities. The ideal candidate will be a dedicated scholar-practitioner in public history who is committed to the public documentation and interpretation of history.

The Department of History, Geography, and Philosophy offers a master's degree in history, bachelor’s degrees in history, philosophy, and geography as well as minors in all three disciplines. Additionally, a concentration in Public History is offered. Smart classrooms, geographic research and laboratory facilities, and excellent teaching resources are available. The department consists of seventeen full-time faculty and one administrative staff member.
