Assistant Professor Position Department of History, Department of Religious Studies, International Studies Program, College of Humanities and Fine Arts The Position: The College of Humanities and Fine Arts is searching for a tenure track assistant professor to start August, 2012. Position is contingent on funding. As a university that educates students of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds, we value a diverse faculty and staff. Chico welcomes applicants who are knowledgeable about and interested in working within a cross-cultural learning environment. Minimum Qualifications: The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a Ph.D. in History, Religious Studies, Area Studies, or related areas. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate may be considered; however, the doctorate must be complete prior to the end of the first semester (December, 2012). Also required are: broad preparation in History of the Middle East and Islam; evidence of or promise as an exceptional undergraduate teacher, especially in mid- to large size General Education lecture and discussion courses; evidence of or promise as an exceptional researcher/writer; and advanced reading knowledge of Arabic. Preferred Qualifications: • Oral and written proficiency in Arabic or advanced reading knowledge in another language relevant to the study of Islam, the Middle East, and/or the candidate’s specialization • A commitment to service to the university and region through program development, advising student clubs or groups, involvement in study abroad, and participation in public forums • A commitment to collegiality and participation in a collaborative faculty environment • Demonstrated experience or promise in program-building Responsibilities: This tenure-track position carries responsibilities in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service. The new hire will regularly teach History of the Middle East, the Modern Middle East, and Islam. The candidate may also teach some of the following courses: Muhammad and the Qur`an; Islamic Civilization; World Religions and Global Issues; Judaism, Christianity, Islam; Jews, Muslims, and the West; The Arab-Israeli Conflict; and/or Ethical Issues and Religion. There will also be opportunities to create new courses, including an advanced course in the person's area of strength and interest in the candidate’s home department. Teaching load is 12 units per semester, with a course reduction each semester during the first two years. Teaching assignments are based upon qualifications of the individual and the needs of the department. Salary: Salary commensurate with education and experience. The Department: The Department of History offers a B.A. with both a General History and a Social Science Credential option, with over 200 majors total. It also offers an M.A. degree, as well as a minor and a certificate in Public History. History faculty teach in programs in Asian Studies, Multicultural and Gender Studies, Women's Studies, Latin American Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, European Studies, Classical Civilization, African Studies, Chicano/a Studies, and American Indian Studies. The Department of Religious Studies enrolls approximately 60 majors and minors. The program is heavily involved in the general education program of the University. In addition, its faculty teach in programs in Humanities, Asian Studies, Multicultural and Gender Studies, Women's Studies, Modern Jewish and Israel Studies, Classical Civilization, Middle Eastern Studies, and American Indian Studies. |
