HABSBURG welcomes...
Kenneth MacLennan (Benicia, CA) <kenmaclenn@yahoo.com> I am returning to HABSBURG (and its cousin H-War) after a hiatus of over a year. My doctoral thesis on the reform of the Theresian ordnance system is still under construction, and my interests in 18th-century warfare and Theresian government and society remain undimmed. My name is Georg Escher and although my origins are Swiss, I have spent a lot of time in the former Habsburg countries, so my interest into 'Habsburg' is academic as well as very personal. I got an MA (German Studies, Geography, Urban Studies) from Zurich University and have been a German Teacher in the Czech Republic and in 2003/04 a Junior Fellow at the IFK in Vienna. Currently I am back at Zurich University working on a PhD project about the literary image of Prague. I am looking forward to getting involved into Habsburg Discussion Group. As an independent art historian (Ph.D., NYU), I work as a curator, cultural journalist and biographer. After running a gallery that specialized in early 20th-century European art for several years, I served as editor of the English pages of Aufbau, the German-Jewish bi-weekly. My biography of Frida Uhl Strindberg, the daughter of Friedrich Uhl (editor and drama critic of the Wiener Zeitung from 1872-1900) and second wife of the playwright, was published by Harcourt in 2000. At present, I am writing a cultural history of my family as it played itself out in the houses they lived or worked in in Moravia, Silesia, Hungary, and Vienna between 1848 and 1938. |
