The Department of History in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences invites nominations and applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of African American History. Georgia Southern University (www.georgiasouthern.edu), a member institution of the University System of Georgia and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, is one of Georgia’s premier universities. A residential university serving more than 19,000 students in fall 2009, Georgia Southern is recognized for providing all of the benefits of a major university with the feeling of a much smaller college. Founded in 1906, the University offers more than 100 campus-based and online degree programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels through eight colleges. The nearly 700 acre park-like campus is located in Statesboro, a classic Main Street community near historic Savannah and Hilton Head Island.
Within this setting, the Department of History offers a student-centered degree program that blends traditional and contemporary approaches, emphasizing global perspectives, while recognizing the value of local and regional history. Students are mentored by a faculty of dedicated teacher-scholars, who are nationally and internationally known in their fields of expertise. The Department of History has 25 faculty members and offers both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in History.
Position Description. Reporting to the chair, the Assistant Professor of African American History position requires teaching, service, and research responsibilities and a terminal degree. The Assistant Professor will teach Surveys of African American and United States History, Historical Methods, and will have the opportunity to develop specialized upper-division and graduate courses. Honors courses, senior seminars, and graduate classes afford an opportunity to work closely with students. The successful candidate will be a dedicated teacher-scholar and will be expected to actively engage in research and scholarly publication consistent with departmental and College standards. The position is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in history by August 1, 2011
• Commitment to excellence in teaching, promise of productive scholarship consistent with the teacher-scholar model, and commitment to professional service within the University and beyond.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Teaching experience in African American history and/or the US history survey (part-time teaching experience is acceptable)
