THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF GENDER & RACE STUDIES ASSISTANT PROFESSOR The University of Alabama invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level in African American Studies. We are interested in applicants from a variety of disciplines and interdisciplinary approaches with expertise in African American Studies, with possible specializations in Black masculinity, Black folklore, Black families, rural cultures, Black health, or Blacks and education. Applicants in social science areas are particularly attractive. We are looking for candidates with a commitment to interdisciplinary research and teaching in African American Studies in our undergraduate programs. Responsibilities include teaching Introduction to African American Studies. Pursuit of an active research agenda leading to the publication of a number of articles or a book is required as well as service to the University community and professional organizations. The successful candidate will present a record of scholarship and teaching that is consistent with tenure-track work at a research university. Preferred applicants will have teaching experience in African American Studies. We are in the process of blending African American Studies with Women’s Studies to form the Department of Gender and Race Studies. Women’s Studies at The University of Alabama is one of the oldest programs in the southeastern United States. The new Gender and Race Studies Department will offer an undergraduate major and minor in African American Studies and an undergraduate minor and M.A in Women’s Studies.
