The Department of Writing Studies at the American University of Sharjah is seeking a department head to fulfill all of the administrative duties outlined below. We encourage candidates to apply who have extensive experience in teaching various kinds and levels of composition courses and appreciation for (and experience in) using a variety of pedagogies (from time-honored rhetorical approaches to the latest developments as practiced in North American universities). Preference will be given to the candidate who has experience in directing a writing program and creating or supporting WAC. In addition to administrative skills we seek an open-minded, collaborative leader who is good at problem solving and willing to advocate for faculty and departmental goals. The successful candidate should have the following: a record of published research in the field of rhetoric and composition; 3 years teaching experience overseas; and awareness of the needs of L2 students. Position Summary The department head is the academic and administrative officer of the department and reports to the college/school dean. The department head is responsible for overseeing the activities of the department to ensure accomplishing the university, academic affairs, college/school, and departmental missions. Scope The department head is responsible for the currency, quality, and effectiveness of academic programs; the hiring, retention, and evaluation of faculty; and the efficient and effective use of personnel, fiscal, and physical resources of the department. The department head oversees the operations at the departmental level, and works closely with faculty, administrators, staff, and students. The department head provides leadership for the development of programs and curricula changes, and provides guidance to faculty for improving academic excellence and promotes the use of innovative teaching methods and scholarly/creative activities. The department head maintains collaborative relationships with a variety of individuals and entities, including: the dean and associate dean, fellow AUS department heads, faculty, students and staff; emirate and national government departments involved with higher education; representatives of local, regional and international agencies, organizations, colleges, and universities.
