Department of Communication Studies The Department of Communication Studies at Randolph College (founded as Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in 1891), an independent, selective liberal-arts institution, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of either assistant or associate professor beginning August 2010. The primary qualification is a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates at all levels. Continuing scholarly activity and service to the campus community is expected. A Ph. D. in Communication or related field is required. The program in communication studies at RC draws upon several critical traditions in the field: rhetoric, cultural studies, political economy and film criticism. The new faculty member should have a proficiency in the critical study of one or more forms of mass media, such as radio, television or digital media, with a focus on media history and technologies, texts, audiences or industries/institutions. Research that engages with the global nature of communication and/or focuses on media in a particular region outside of the United States, such as East Asia, is preferred. Currently the position entails teaching two core courses: Introduction to Mass Media and Communication Technologies and Culture; five electives, and participation in a team-taught two-semester senior capstone program. The successful applicant will be free to develop courses in her/his area of specialization and have the opportunity to help shape the future of the college and the department. Candidates should send a letter of application including a statement of teaching and research interests and a curriculum vitae to Professor Jennifer Gauthier, Department of Communication Studies, Randolph College, 2500 Rivermont Avenue, Lynchburg, Virginia 24503 [Tel. (434) 947-8501; e-mail: jgauthier@randolphcollege.edu]. In addition, please arrange for us to receive three letters of recommendation, two of which should primarily address teaching effectiveness. Additional materials may be requested at a later date. Applications received by November 16 will receive first priority, but will be considered until the position is filled. EOE |
