FIRST YEAR PROGRAM DIRECTOR AND FACULTY The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) seeks to hire a full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty member for its innovative First Year Program. A required curriculum for 500 freshmen annually, the foundations program provides an intensive introduction to contemporary art and design practices. Given its position in an art and design school with a transdisciplinary focus, the FYP aims to develop critical thinking and studio production skills across diverse media and to prepare incoming students for the extraordinary range of courses and programs at SAIC. Rank and salary commensurate with experience, teaching, and current professional status. Responsibilities: The Director is a leadership position at SAIC and is responsible for the curricular and programmatic vitality of the First Year Program. The Director’s main responsibility is to develop and maintain innovative foundations courses and to select and assign faculty to teach those courses. The program offers 150 courses a year taught by a large (fifty) and diverse faculty composed primarily of part-time instructors, and is administratively supported by two full-time staff positions. Other duties include facilities planning and oversight, budget and resource allocation, periodic evaluations of curriculum and faculty performance, coordination of year-end exhibitions, and teaching in the program. The Director works in partnership with the Deans, the Undergraduate Division, Student Affairs, and the chairs of twenty studio and academic departments. Qualifications: Candidates should have a minimum of five years full-time experience teaching both foundation studio and one or more studio areas as well as a demonstrated ability to work effectively with both faculty and staff as a manager and a mentor. The ideal candidate is an outstanding teacher with a solid studio practice, an exceptional exhibition record, and an active interest in contemporary art and design, theory and criticism with an ability to administer and shape a robust program in the foundational arts that is developed in concert with SAIC’s vision and in support of its current undergraduate programs.
