Africa: Connecticut College invites applications for a tenure-track position in the History Department at the rank of assistant professor for a historian of Sub-Saharan Africa. All specializations in colonial, post-colonial and modern history will be considered with a preference for East or West Africa. Preference will also be given to candidates who place their scholarship and teaching within a transnational context and demonstrate connections between the history of Africa and Africans and the history of the rest of the world. Responsibilities will include teaching a one semester Introduction to African history, intermediate courses, and upper-level courses in his/her area of specialty. This is a full-time tenure-track position beginning 1 July 2010. Ph.D at time of appointment preferred and demonstrated excellence in teaching and research relative to experience required. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated awareness of the importance of diversity in education and will have an opportunity to contribute in the development of a revitalized Africana Studies major. Connecticut College is a private, highly selective institution with a demonstrated commitment to outstanding faculty teaching and research. The College seeks creative scholars excited about working in a liberal arts setting, with its strong focus on engaged teaching, participation in shared governance, and active involvement in an institution-wide advancement of diversity. Tenure-track faculty members teach a 3-2 load (2-2 in the first year). In addition to providing ongoing strong support for teaching and research, the College offers the following resources for pre-tenured faculty: a summer stipend for the first two years, a supplementary research fund, and a semester’s sabbatical after a successful third-year review.
