DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AND CIVIL WAR INSTITUTE
Gettysburg College announces the search for Director of its Civil War Institute and the Robert C. Fluhrer Professor of Civil War Studies.
With the retirement in summer 2009 of noted Civil War historian Gabor Boritt, Director Emeritus of the Civil War Institute (CWI) at Gettysburg College and formerly the College’s Robert C. Fluhrer Professor of Civil War Studies, Gettysburg College has launched a search for the next Director of the CWI. The next Director will assume the position in August 2010. This individual will also be named to the Fluhrer Professorship. The Director of the CWI is responsible for leading the Institute and growing its connections within the College and with outside organizations and constituencies. Specific responsibilities of the Director include administration, development activities, scholarship, and teaching.
The person ultimately selected as the next Director of the CWI and the College’s Fluhrer Professor will be a recognized scholar in Civil War era studies and a dedicated teacher. The Fluhrer Professorship is based on the teacher-scholar model, and the next Fluhrer Professor will be an active member of the College’s Department of History. In recognition of the duties associated with Directorship of the CWI, the Fluhrer Professor will have a reduced teaching load. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. degree in history, demonstrate a record of distinguished scholarship in the history of the Civil War era, and have the ability to administer and develop the Civil War Institute.
