Modern African History. The Department of History at West Virginia University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in African history, excluding East Africa, beginning Aug. 16, 2010. WVU is a research institution and the normal teaching load is two courses per semester for research-productive faculty. The department seeks an innovative scholar with research experience in Africa who can contribute to a program strength in comparative colonial and post colonial societies. The department is particularly interested in candidates whose research incorporates one or more of the following: gender, political economy, and/or the environment. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate surveys in world history and the history of the African continent, as well as more specialized undergraduate and graduate courses. PhD in hand is expected by the time of the appointment, with preference given to candidates with successful teaching experience and/or other evidence of effective teaching skills, a record of scholarly publications, and a demonstrated potential to secure external funding in support of their research.
