Historian of Medieval Europe
Amherst and Mount Holyoke Colleges
Amherst College and Mount Holyoke College seek a historian of Medieval Europe or Europe and the Mediterranean (ca. 300-1400) for a shared entry-level, tenure-track appointment as Five College Assistant Professor of History to begin 2010-2011. The area of specialization is open, but Mount Holyokes History Department already has a specialist in late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. Based at Amherst College, the occupant of this position will be a member of the faculties of Amherst College and Mount Holyoke College with primary teaching responsibilities shared between the two institutions. These responsibilities will include teaching two courses per semester in medieval history and (periodically) in departmental courses and advising students interested in undertaking independent work in the subject. All requirements for the Ph.D. must be completed by time of appointment. The successful candidate for this position will have some teaching experience and a strong commitment to combining undergraduate teaching with an ongoing program of research and publication.
Candidates should submit a letter of application describing teaching and research interests, a curriculum vitae, sample syllabi for undergraduate courses, and a sample of written work (that, ideally, is no longer than 30 pages in length -- an article or chapter, e.g.). Candidates should also arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent directly to the Search Committee.
