Heidelberg University seeks to employ as soon as possible a Research Scholar (akademische Mitarbeiterin/akademischer Mitarbeiter) in Chinese or East Asian Intellectual History in the Cluster “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”, which is funded by the German Federal Excellence Initiative (www.asia-europe.uni-heidelberg.de). The successful candidate should hold a doctorate in Chinese Studies, East Asian Studies, Philosophy, History or a related field at the time the position begins (ABD may be considered) and show evidence of scholarly promise in the form of publications or other achievements. Fluency in English and at least one East Asian language are essential; research experience in Asia is desirable. German is not required but German language classes are available. The position is primarily devoted to research but entails some teaching (one course per semester) and the usual administrative duties. It is ranked at the TV-L 13 level in the German system, which roughly corresponds to that of Lecturer in Britain, Assistant Professor in North America, and Maître de conférences in France. Initial appointment is for three years with a possibility of renewal.
