Jarislowsky Chair in the Modern History of the Middle East and North Africa, Department of History, Faculty of Arts, University of Manitoba Position Number 08799 The University of Manitoba invites applications or nominations for the Stephen A. Jarislowsky Chair in the Modern History of the Middle East and North Africa. The position represents an exciting opportunity for an academic of outstanding potential who is becoming internationally recognized as a scholar in the field. The rank of the appointment for the Chair is advanced assistant professor or above. The Chairholder will have a strong research program and a substantial publication and research record relative to stage in career, teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and international standing that enables scholarly connections and collaborative work between the Chairholder, the University of Manitoba and other researchers on the Middle East and North Africa. The appointment will be effective July 1, 2010 or soon thereafter. The mission of the Stephen A. Jarislowsky Chair in the History of the Modern Middle East and North Africa will be to build knowledge and enhance understanding of the peoples, cultures, and societies in this vitally important region of the world. The successful applicant will be a specialist in any area of history of the modern Middle East or North Africa. The Chairholder will be expected to carry out a strong and highly visible research agenda, to contribute to our undergraduate and graduate teaching program, and to initiate and participate in relevant outreach activities. A completed PhD, publications, and a demonstrated record of successful teaching are required. Experience in mentoring graduate students is a strong asset. We have a special interest in candidates who have demonstrated an ability to promote discussion and debate, and to build research collaborations across traditional disciplinary boundaries.
