Culture of Medicine Harvard University Professor or Associate Professor Faculties of Arts and Sciences and Medicine Harvard University’s Faculties of Arts and Sciences and of Medicine invite applications to a joint, open-rank search in the culture of medicine. Candidates will be considered for a tenured professorship or a tenure-track associate professorship. This position is established to expand the University’s research and teaching in the cultural, historical, social, humanistic, and ethical aspects of medicine. We seek applicants who are conversant with: the medical humanities, interpretive social sciences, medical professionalism, and/or ethics. The role of the appointee will be to encourage research and teaching of humanistic values in medicine that include: historical perspectives on health and disease; social impact of new knowledge in medicine and basic science in regard to practice, policy, and outcome; humanistic, social science, and ethical perspectives on physician-patient relationships; global and cross-cultural vantages of health and medicine; and historical, literary and artistic depictions of medicine and the experience of disease. The appointee will teach undergraduate, graduate, and medical students and will have important intellectual and administrative responsibilities in building programmatic initiatives that complement and expand upon existing strengths. This position requires distinguished achievements in both research and teaching. Departmental affiliation will be with the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and will be assigned as appropriate in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
