A visiting faculty member or lecturer is needed to teach History 205, "Modern East Asia," and a second upper-level course on China or comparative East Asia, to be determined by department needs and candidate strengths, during the winter term 2010, January 1 - April 30, 2010. A general description of History 205 is as follows: An interdisciplinary analysis of the impact of the modern world on the traditional cultures of China, Japan, Korea, and related areas, and the subsequent transformation of the societies of these countries, with an examination of the differing responses of China and Japan to the modern challenge. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the instructor will oversee any course Graduate Student Instructor(s) if applicable; hold office hours for students; do course planning and grading; and provide an appropriate syllabus and course materials electronically. This is a non-tenure track position for winter 2010 ONLY. Successful applicants must have a Ph.D. with specialization in the history of China or comparative East Asia. Additional requirements include demonstrated successful teaching experience and enthusiasm for teaching undergraduate students.
